Although the festive season is often filled with colour and vibrancy, this year, we’re feeling inspired by sophisticated white Christmas decorating ideas. From your furnishings to the final festive flourishes, white is a perfect AW15 Christmas look that can be adapted for spring and throughout the year.
A crisp white backdrop works all year round but at this time of year provides a gorgeous festive feel. White is also an extremely versatile tone and can be used to create a range of different looks. A white or cream sofa creates an opulent Luxe scheme (take a look at our collection of designer sofas from Eichholtz) while smooth white furnishings with architectural shapes exude the Scandic minimalism of the Urban look.
Over the festive season we’re combining warm white upholstery on soft furnishings with white timber furniture and long pile rugs to create a Chic chalet-inspired scheme with a contemporary twist. Alternatively, for a sleek, Snow Queen inspired white scheme, pair white walls and soft furnishings with glass, mirrored and silver furniture to develop a high glamour look that is timeless and elegant.
Texture has been one of the leading trends in both fashion and interiors throughout AW15 and rich, natural finishes are going to be sticking around for SS16 too. A range of textures work particularly well with white interior schemes as they add dimension and depth, preventing the monotone look from feeling flat.
Textures across soft furnishings such as throws and cushions in chunky knits, soft fur and rich linen are wonderful white Christmas decorating ideas but we’re also adding interesting textures and finishes in furniture and accessories. High gloss white lighting, chalky matt finishes on ceramics and white painted timbers are also perfect for this trend and create a feeling of contrast that is eclectic and chic.
An all-white scheme can be a daunting prospect with many feeling that the lack of colour feels sterile, however, as we mentioned, incorporating lots of texture easily combats this. Remember to consider the type of white you choose as this will also impact the feel of the space. Bright whites with blue undertones complement modern looks with clean lines but, for a warmer, romantic feel – perfect for snuggling up over the Christmas season - look for whites that have cream, pink or yellow tones. Layering some soft neutral hues such as pale sand and dove grey will also give your white scheme a little extra dimension.
If you wish to add a subtle flush of colour to your white look, we’re feeling especially inspired by delicate blush pink – a shade that was big news for AW15 and will be appearing across the collection in SS16 too. Pantone’s Rose Quartz is a beautiful partner for white schemes adding warmth and a touch of new season style, try adding it through ceramics, cushions and accent furnishings.
Add the festive finishing touches to your white scheme with decorations in a range of finishes. Layer white painted baubles, branch style trees, frosted foliage and natural wood decorations with white washes for a Chic Christmas look that is romantic and welcoming as well as stylish. For a Luxe aesthetic add a touch of silver and glass to the Christmas tree decorations or, for an Urban look, contrast porcelain finishes with precise lines.
For a final festive twinkle add festoons of fairy lights – look for warm white for a cosy glow – and plenty of candles. White tea light holders with cut outs will cast beautiful shadows around the room and add to the Christmas ambience while lanterns filled with pillar candles are gorgeous around entrance ways or in fireplaces.
