Founded in 1920, ercol has been creating furniture that is as practical as it is stylish for over 90 years and we love the iconic, Mid Century aesthetic designs at the heart of the ercol brand. We interview ercol design director, Rachel Galbraith, to find out about the ethos behind these stunning pieces.
Q: How did you become involved with ercol, what did you do before?
A: My design journey began working in the high street retail environment and for the last 15 years I’ve predominately worked within furniture design. During this time I’ve had the pleasure of working with the ercol creative team on a number of inspiring projects.
Q: Where does your passion for design come from?
A: I would definitely say I’ve always had a passion for design and particularly furniture. We interact with furniture in all areas of our lives and the desire for both aesthetic and functionality is what drives me.
Q: How would you describe the overall ercol aesthetic?
A: Ercol's heritage is rooted in iconic Mid Century design. The company was first established by Italian furniture maker Lucian Ercolani and the aesthetic is achieved by taking inspiration from traditional craftsmanship and commissioning designs from some of the best talent in British product design.
Q: Ercol has a rich heritage of furniture design, how would you say the designs have changed over the years?
A: Ercol has evolved over the years although the looks always keep to the core ethos of understated designs that are created for comfort, functionality and beauty. Original 1950s designs in trend-led colours and design-led fabrics have really established our ercol furniture design icons.
Q: What style of home do you think ercol pieces work best with?
A: Ercol furniture is really versatile and works in many environments, anywhere from Urban style spaces to casual living and classic interiors too.
When I think of how the products complement my own interior space, I would describe an ercol furniture piece as the perfect complement for casual living with an eclectic mix of design styles and iconic Mid Century style notes. The stained finishes of Ercol furniture are also beautifully accented with metallic accessories such as copper and brass too.
Q: Where do your own design inspirations come from?
A: My inspiration comes from exhibitions, magazines, architecture, fashion trends and vintage fairs; I find I’m constantly being inspired by my environment.
Q: Ercol has created lots of iconic designs, is there a piece that stands out to you as a favourite?
Q: How would you describe your own style?
A: I would describe my style as casual living but I like to incorporate statement design pieces into schemes too.
Q: What do you like about working with Houseology?
A: I like that Houseology allows accessibility to great design.
