Founded in 2011, NORR11 is a furniture brand that places equal emphasis on “pure designs” and functionality. With design roots clearly embedded in traditional Scandinavian design, NORR11 offers a fresh new take on the classic Danish furniture tradition with design duo Knut Bendik Humlevik and Rune Krøjgaard spearheading the movement. Attention to detail, traditional principles and an understanding of materials are key to the creation of these cool contemporary collections, we speak to the team behind the brand to find out more about the inspirations and plans for the future.
Q: What would you say influences and inspires the NORR11 designs?
Rune: Designers throughout the world influence me, but of course my roots are strongly based in Danish design. I’m also inspired by other fields of design such as heavy industries and especially construction design. I grew up on a farm and I find farm equipment has beautiful shapes and functions, which can be converted or adapted into home accessories.
Knut: I come from an architectural education which has taught me a lot about how to work with a concept. A lot of inspiration also comes from the furniture “heroes” of the past centuries. It’s surprising where I find inspiration, it can come from very small things that have lots of character.
Q: Which materials do you prefer to work with? Why do they suit your designs best?
Rune: I could narrow it down to wood but for me it depends more on the design, the shape and its feeling. I always ask myself, “Which material is suitable for making this exact object?” But really, wood is the material I prefer to use because of the way you can work with it and the smell, I especially love the smell.
Q: How do you characterise your design work?
Knut: The pure use of shape – it’s important for me that the user really sees the product and feels its intention. One does not necessarily have to understand every line and movement in the design, but an understanding of the product is important. I strive to express this in my work and combine it with an honest use of materials.
Q: How important is it for you to be a part of the production process?
Knut: It’s important - I think it’s necessary in the understanding of industrial design. It has taught me a lot such as the strengths and weaknesses of various materials.
Q: NORR11 prides itself on having a pure style and being devoted to functionality. How do you achieve that without being boring?
Knut: What is the definition of boring? I think it's important not to be afraid of being boring, but to believe that the honesty of the style is pure. For me, functionality is a key factor, and can never be ignored, so if I can achieve pure style and functionality in a product, I'm happy.
Q: Where do you see NORR11 in the next few years?
Knut: Playing a central role in the European furniture market. I hope that NORR11 will be at a stage, where we can offer the market a challenge, and be a brand that provides the market with young, new designers and affordable, good design.
